for everyone
As I found out just today, I have probably taken the last picture of three climbers only minutes before they died on the wall of Artesonraju. This was when I was climbing Pisco more than a week ago. They were barely visible in the far distance but William, our guide, had spotted them with his impressive eye-sight.

I had a look through my pictures again and found one where they are just visible. Minutes later they were nowhere to be seen anymore. William was quite concerned then, but there was nothing to be done. The only way to disappear that quickly from the middle of a 900m ice wall is by falling down. A most horrible tragedy which is the talk of the town at the moment. Their bodies have just been recovered from a crevasse at the bottom of the mountain yesterday.

I have uploaded the picture here.

There is some news on the accident on the internet here, here, and here.

Terrible story. Be careful on those ice walls - you have good eyes to spot them in that photo. The photo's of the summit climb look awesome. Anna

Puh, that is really tragic. Very young guides. Well, hiking is a dangerous sports. When staying in Wanaka, a young New Zealander also died. Sounds a bit like a incautious expedition though. I really had to think of the Book/ film of 'Touching the void' when seing your pix. It is a classics for hikers and if you have not read it so far - it is really a thrilling book. Saw the Film in NZ....I am a bit behind in following your trip, bit busy here at the moment, going to look at your Pisco Summit Experience soon. Take care and enjoy. Big hug, Maike

'Touching the Void' happened in the Cordillera Huayhuash on Siula Grande and the Yerupajá glacier. Some of my pics indeed show exactly the scenery, e.g. http://captainchris.multiply.com/photos/photo/47/102

Have read the book here in Huaraz in one day and saw the film the same night... They show it every other day in town for the obvious reasons. Horrible but gripping story. Recommended, I agree.
